Buckhurst Embankment Retention

Client: AM1

Location: Buckhurst

Overview

PACE Infrastructure Solutions Ltd was appointed to deliver emergency design and build bank stabilisation works at Buckhurst in the Wessex region. The intervention followed the identification of a significant embankment slip risk during planned high-voltage (HV) upgrade works. With tight timescales, evolving access constraints, and complex site conditions, PACE responded rapidly to deliver a bespoke stabilisation solution that addressed both safety and operational concerns.

Our Scope

PACE’s full-scope service included:

  • Design and implementation of cost-effective retention systems to stabilise the embankment
  • Protection and management of existing buried HV infrastructure adjacent to the works
  • Adaptation to access restrictions, including reactive planning following the loss of a planned level crossing access point
  • Use of mobile crane logistics to deploy and remove plant due to last-minute road closures
  • Delivery of all works within a 52-hour blockade
  • The project required high levels of flexibility, coordination, and technical precision to ensure successful execution.
Technical Approach

To meet the urgent nature of the works, PACE deployed a collaborative and agile approach:

  • Early Contractor Involvement: Immediate engagement with the client ensured alignment on technical solutions and delivery plans
  • Cost-effective Design: Retention methods were carefully selected to meet site-specific constraints and budgetary requirements
  • Access and Methodology Adaptation: Following a loss of planned access just one week prior to delivery, the team rapidly transitioned to a mobile crane solution
  • Hydrostatic Pressure Management: Jet water filters were incorporated to relieve pressure behind the retention structure, enhancing long-term stability
Outcome

PACE completed the Buckhurst bank stabilisation project within the allocated 52-hour blockade and budget, with no additional possessions required. The successful delivery resulted in: Zero delays to the HV upgrade programme Significant cost efficiencies through proactive planning and solution-led engineering Client satisfaction, with the works meeting all expectations under high-pressure conditions This project highlighted PACE’s ability to deliver reactive, high-quality infrastructure solutions in logistically complex and safety-critical environments.
